Distinguished Alumni Award

Each spring since 1963, the West Chester University Alumni Association has hosted the Distinguished Alumni Awards ceremony. These awards are presented to WCU graduates who have provided a great service to society, received outstanding acknowledgement in their profession, and positively affected a large number of people.

Mark Barnes

Mark Barnes '93, PhD

Dr. Barnes has made an indelible impact on West Chester University through his leadership and mentorship, particularly as the revitalizing force behind the Black Alumni Chapter, where his service and dedication have fostered a thriving network of alumni. As an Associate Professor at Morgan State University, his groundbreaking work in geography, environmental justice, and student mentorship has shaped the academic and professional journeys of countless students, helping to diversify the field. His national recognition, from prestigious fellowships to board memberships, reflects his unwavering commitment to advancing education, community engagement, and social justice on a local and global scale.

Debra Castaldo

Debra D. Castaldo '78

Dr. Castaldo’s distinguished career in social work spans more than four decades. As a renowned therapist, educator, and author, she has made a profound impact on individuals and communities through her expertise in relationship therapy and wellness. Her unwavering dedication to West Chester University is reflected in her active role as a valued member of the CESW Advisory Council, her significant legacy gift through the Dr. Debra Delp Castaldo Endowment in Social Work, and her ongoing engagement with WCU students and faculty. Dr. Castaldo’s work, including her media presence, contributions to mental health organizations, and mentorship of future social work professionals, has left an enduring legacy, shaping both her field and the lives of those she serves.

Danny Hale

2025 Distinguished Alumni Award
Danny E. Hale '68, M'74

Danny's legendary career in college football earned him a place in the 2024 National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame. With 213 career wins, Hale led with passion and purpose at both Bloomsburg University and West Chester University, building powerhouse programs and impacting countless lives along the way. Overall, he was named the American Football Coaches Association District I Coach of the Year nine times and PSAC Eastern Division Coach of the Year ten times. His legacy goes far beyond the field and is defined by mentorship, leadership, and a deep commitment to student success.
